Behn leads Seahawks at Smith Invitational

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.-- Salve Regina men's cross country was led by efforts from senior Shane Behn (19:13.4) and junior Ty Gallagher (20:25.8) Saturday at the 2023 Smith Cross Country Invitational.

The top Salve Regina finisher in 2022 came in 50th with a time of 20:00.1 and Behn beat both that finish and his own time from last year of 20:07.2.

Both the men's and women's cross country teams had the opportunity to race the same 5k distance, a change from the usual 6k for women and 8k for men. The top five men's teams included Worcester Polytechnic Institute (16:29 average time), Amherst College (16:36 average time), Babson College (17:14 average time), Springfield College (18:08 average time) and Emerson College (19:28 average time).

"We didn't score as a team since we have a smaller roster," said head coach Kacie Gallo. "However, we're looking forward to returning to Smith at the end of October for the first NEWMAC championships."

On the horizon for Seahawks is the UMass Dartmouth Invitational in Wenham, Mass. on Saturday, Sept. 16.
