BIDDEFORD, Maine – Senior Scott Brewer (Wilbraham, Mass.) led Salve Regina to a sixth-place finish in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Cross Country Championship on Saturday.

Brewer and fellow senior captain Andrew Sardelli (Hope Valley, R.I.) took an aggressive approach to the opening loop around Rotary Park, running among the top 10 in the field of 100 for the first 2 kilometers of the race.

The brisk pace would ultimately prove to be unsustainable, and both Brewer and Sardelli dropped back and found their teammates outside the top 20 as the course took a second, longer loop around the fields and trails.

Sophomore Riley Rancourt (Warren, R.I.), freshman Aidan Lynch (Little Silver, N.J.) and senior captain Dave Napierkowski (Cheshire, Conn.) picked up the pace on the middle loop as Brewer and Sardelli settled into the mix. With one loop remaining on the course, the Seahawk scorers were less than 10 seconds apart.

Brewer moved to the head of the pack for Salve Regina on the closing loop, finishing as the team's top runner for the sixth time this season. Rancourt, Sardelli, Lynch and Napierkowski finished out the scoring. Junior Dan Donnelly (Portsmouth, R.I.) and sophomore Brendan Kelly (Lynbrook, N.Y.) held the No. 6 and No. 7 spots.

Gordon College senior Damon Kilgore claimed a commanding individual win, finishing the 8K course in 25:57. Kilgore was more than 40 seconds ahead of the runner up, Alex Robbins of the Wentworth Institute of Technology.

The Leopards of Wentworth captured their third consecutive Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship, placing three runners – Robbins, Dan McSolla and Josh Gangemi – inside the top 10 and all five scorers inside the top 15.
