Seahawks kickoff season in New Hampshire

HENNIKER, N.H. - Salve Regina sophomore Sean Hughes (Old Saybrook, Conn.) picked up a top-10 finish to lead the Seahawks to third place in the Mayflower Kickoff Invitational at New England College.

Hughes was seventh overall, finishing the 5K in 16:53. Mark Gulesian of Babson College won the race in 16:09, while Neil Hulstein of Gordon (16:15) and Benjamin Bunnell of Colby-Sawyer (16:16) were second and third.

A tight scoring pack made the difference for Salve Regina, with freshman Billy Martin (West Islip, N.Y.) at 17:43, senior James Weselcouch (East Haddam, Conn.) at 17:47, freshman Daniel Regan (Westford, Mass.) at 17:54 and sophomore Slater Roosa (Woodbury, Conn.) at 18:05. The Seahawks' sixth and seventh runners – Tyler Torelli (Ledyard, Conn.) and Anthony Tandy (Hopedale, Mass.) - crossed the finish line at 18:13 and 18:19. Martin, Weselcouch, Regan, Roosa, Torelli and Tandy all finished in the top 30 in the field of 123 runners.

Babson College won the team title with 26 points, marking a third consecutive Mayflower Invitational win for the Beavers. Gordon College was second with 87, while Salve Regina was third with 91. The third-place finish marks the highest invitational finish for Salve Regina since the men's cross country program was reconstituted in 2005.
