FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (November 16, 2019) - Salve Regina University and Rowan University could not have been more evenly matched after 110 minutes of play in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship hosted by the University of Mary Washington at the UMW Battleground. The final score (0-0) after four playing periods (two 45s, and a pair of OT 10s) also had the Seahawks and Profs equal in shots (nine apiece), goalkeeper saves (three apiece), and nearly identical in corner kicks (SRU-7; RU-6).

A physical battle for 110 minutes featured 17 fouls for Salve Regina and three yellow cards while Rowan was whistled for 11 fouls and two yellow cards, the last coming in the 106th minute. Neither team was able to find the back of the net against Profs sophomore James Weinberg (Morganville, N.J.) or Seahawk freshman Seth Wolins (Wake Forest, N.C.).

Thus the match had to be decided in a penalty kick shootout. Rowan senior Modou Sowe (Harrison, N.J.) scored on the Profs' second attempt, followed by Matt Fahey (Williamstown, N.J.) and Alex Ferrara (Scotch Plains, N.J.) on the third and fourth attempts. Senior tri-captain Evan MacDonald (Candia, N.H.) got the Seahawks on the board with their third attempt, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Rich Ventura (Floral Park, N.Y.) scored on the fourth shot for Salve Regina, before senior co-captain Ryan Logar (Sewell, N.J.) sealed the 4-2 edge for Rowan in the shootout and sent the Profs to the second round.

Rowan is now 11-5-4 while Salve Regina ends its season at 14-4-4.
