Springfield stymies men's lacrosse 17-8

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Saturday, April 20, 2024)-- Springfield College thwarted Salve Regina men's lacrosse 17-8 after a successful first quarter on the Pride's home Stagg Field on Saturday. Daniel NaglieriLiam Cooney and Chris Koltzan each fired off two goals after 60 minutes. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Last matchup: This is the first meeting of the Pride and Seahawks in men's lacrosse. 

BREAKDOWN: 

The Springfield College Pride got right to business establishing a 3-0 lead over the Seahawk men's lacrosse team in the first 10 minutes. Daniel Naglieri broke the streak to get Salve Regina on the board with 4:21 to go in the first quarter. 

Liam Cooney scored in the first 25 seconds of the second quarter as the visitors attempted to put a stop to the Pride's momentum. Springfield managed to keep the game in their favor by taking control of the faceoff. The Pride went 20-28 on faceoffs over the course of the game. The Pride also safely cleared the ball 18 of 18 times, while they snuck in to stop Salve Regina on 18 of 27 attempts. 

To begin the second half Springfield already led 7-3. The third quarter was when the Pride really surged ahead by outscoring the Seahawks 5-1. Chris Koltzan was the only Seahawk who posted a goal less than one minute into the second half. 

With a three-goal run the visiting Seahawks entered the final quarter with renewed energy. Brendan TreacyChris Koltzan and Daniel Naglieri were the athletes who put points on the board. However, it wasn't enough to pull even and Salve Regina faced a 7-12 deficit. The Pride went on to secure five more goals and the NEWMAC game ended 18-9 in favor of Springfield.

NOTEWORTHY: 

  • William Kein made 12 saves in 29 shots on net. 
  • Kaden Quirk, for the Pride, made 13 saves in 21 shots on goal. 
  • Salve Regina nabbed 26 ground balls, led by Gavin Johnson who had seven. Johnson also caused three turnovers, the highest number for Salve Regina during the contest. 

ON THE HORIZON: 

The last game of the regular season is on Saturday, April 27 in Cambridge, Massachusetts for the Seahawks. Massachusetts Institute of Technology invites men's lacrosse to Roberts Field for a 1 p.m. start.
