Seahawks secure first NEWMAC win over Bears

NEWPORT, R.I. (Saturday, March 16, 2024)-- Men's lacrosse attained their first conference win, topping the United States Coast Guard Academy 12-10 on Toppa Field at the end of spring break. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Salve Regina 12, Coast Guard 10
Records: Salve Regina (2-4, 1-0 NEWMAC), Coast Guard (1-4, 0-1 NEWMAC)
Last matchup: Last year, on March 2, 2023, the Bears beat the Seahawks 24-9. 

BREAKDOWN: 

  • 1HJustin DeBalsi and the Seahawks were the first to score and take the lead with only 45 seconds gone from the score board. A little less than a minute later Liam Cooney (from Brendan Treacy) continued the momentum before Bears' Patrick Smith scored. The score was tied at 3-3 following 15 minutes of action. The Seahawks outscored the Bears 4-1 in the second quarter, although Coast Guard got ahead early 4-1, the tides changed when Chris Koltzan's goal started out the series of successes. Salve Regina entered the half ahead 7-4. 
  • 2H: Coast Guard's Eric Key shrank Salve Regina's lead to within two points after he scored three minutes into the third quarter. To close out a three-goal run, Casey Johnson converted right in front of the net. Daniel Naglieri leaped to save the ball from going out of play right before the possession clock buzzer sounded, sending it over the Bear's goal into the netting of Johnson's stick. Going into the final 15 minutes of the contest it was an 11-6 Seahawks game. Coast Guard struck back in the final quarter. Although the Seahawks scored first, the Bears netted the last four goals of the day. Salve Regina successfully held off the Bears advances for a 12-10 final score. Brendan Treacy and Justin DeBalsi achieved hat tricks. Treacy also provided four assists for a combined seven points.

NOTEWORTHY: 

  • Salve Regina outshot Coast Guard 38-37
  • William Kein made 11 saves on 21 shots on net.
  • Bears' Matt Reheuser made nine saves on 21 shots on net.

ON THE HORIZON: 

As part of a double-header, on Saturday, March 23, women's lacrosse will host Springfield College at 12 p.m. and men's lacrosse hosts Clark University at 3 p.m. at Gaudet Field.
