Cardinals quell Seahawks 30-8

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (Wednesday, March 6, 2024)-- Men's lacrosse was reduced to a 22-point deficit by the Wesleyan University Cardinals when the team made the trip to the Cardinal's home Citrin Field and fell 30-8.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Wesleyan 30, Salve Regina 8
Records: Salve Regina (1-3,0-0 NEWMAC), Wesleyan (2-0,1-0 NESCAC)
Last matchup: Going into today's matchup the Seahawks were 0-4 all-time against the Cardinals. When the teams first met on March 6, 2010, Salve Regina lost 8-3.  

BREAKDOWN: 

  • 1H: The Seahawks and Cardinals attacked and counterattacked, matching echoer at 2-2 for the first seven minutes. Wesleyan acted first but Max Beauchamp tied it at 1-1. Following the Cardinals second goal, they were called for tripping, giving the Seahawks a man up. Chris Koltzan (from Liam Cooney) took advantage of the opportunity and scored, bringing it to 2-2. The Cardinals went on a run, scoring five unanswered goals, but to end the first quarter Justin DeBalsi (from Brendan Treacy) netted the ball making it 7-3 with the Seahawks trailing. In the first five minutes of the second quarter Wesleyan knocked down four more goals, extending their lead to 11-3. Brendan Treacy put a stop to the Cardinals' run when he slung it past Cardinals' goalkeeper Sam Jewett for a goal at 8:12 remaining. Max Beauchamp and Liam Cooney (from) Kieran Hughes also scored in the second quarter. The Cardinals were up 17-6 going into halftime.
  • 2H: Wesleyan won the faceoff to start the half and shot off a goal with 57 seconds gone from the clock. The Cardinals continued to surge forward, scoring seven times in the third quarter. Brendan Treacy cut the deficit back when he found the back of the net with 9:38 left to play in period three. Daniel Naglieri posted the final Seahawk punch of the day with just over four minutes down in the final quarter but the Cardinals were dominant with 13 goals in the second half for a 30-8 finish.
