Seahawks, Hawks renew acquaintances; Fiore leads Salve Regina to 11-point win at home

NEWPORT, R.I. (Saturday, December 30, 2023) -- The Salve Regina University men's basketball team met Roger Williams University for the first time since the mid 1980s as non-conference foes, and the Seahawks defeated the Hawks, 92-81, behind four double-figure scorers including Miles Fiore's (Narragansett, R.I.) team-high 24 points.

All-Time Series: Seahawks and Hawks, separated by 14 miles and 28 minutes (depending on who's flying/driving), meet on the hardwood for a men's basketball matchup for the 80th time, and first as members of separate conferences. Salve Regina, the newest NEWMAC member, had been a charter member of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) before Roger Williams joined in the late 80s. With an in-state rivalry that extends back to 1982, Salve Regina holds a 43-36 lead in the all-time series. The Seahawks have won five of the last seven meetings, including the most recent four meetings at the Rodgers Recreation Center. Salve Regina won, 81-71, last February as Mikey Spencer scored 27 points.

SUMMARY:

  • 1H - Will Parisi led the Seahawks with 12 points on five field goals including two 3-pointers. Clay Brochu started the game with a 3-pointer and Salve Regina had an 11-0 lead following field goals from Declan Walmsley, Miles Fiore, and James Jolly (2). The Seahawks led by 16 points (19-3) at the 13:00 mark but the visiting Hawks closed the gap to three (28-25) over the next six minutes. Ty Higgins led all players with 16 points on 5-of-6 from the floor including four treys and two free throws. Salve Regina made 20 of 37 field goals (54.1 percent).   • 2H - Miles Fiore played the entire 20 minutes and posted period bests in points (16). Fiore and James Jolly each hauled in seven rebounds. Clay Brochu added 13 points which included a pair of long-range baskets; both treys came in the first 90 seconds of the second half. Finn Miller and Ty Higgins both scored 10 points in the second half for the visitors. Higgins' free throws at 2:44 got Roger Williams as close as eight points (83-75) before Brochu had a layup and free throws by the senior captain, Fiore, and Declan Walmsley finished the scoring for the Seahawks. NOTEWORTHY:

  • Will Parisi led the Seahawks with 12 first-half points before finishing with 14 for the game.
  • Miles Fiore posted a double-double with team highs in points (24) and rebounds (12).
  • Salve Regina dominated the boards with a 48 to 27 advantage (+21).
  • The Seahawks had 52 points in the paint and 18 second-chance points.
  • The hosts upped their shooting percentage in the second half and finished the game at 54.4 percent (37-of-68).
  • Clay Brochu and Declan Walmsley finished with 18 and 16 points, respectively.
  • James Jolly also had double-digit rebounds (10).
