Peterkin propels Ramapo to 88-68 win over Salve Regina

Mahwah, N.J. - Junior LaQuan Peterkin was named Most Outstanding Player of the 2010-2011 Tip-Off Tournament after draining 13 points and pulling down 11 rebounds leading his team to a 88-68 victory over Salve Regina. With the win, Ramapo improves to 3-0 overall. Salve Regina falls to 1-2.

 

Peterkin grabbed two steals and posted two blocks as the Roadrunners earned the championship crown today in the Bradley Center. AJ LoRusso recorded 18 points with six rebounds shooting 7-8 from the free throw line. The team combined shooting 49% with 28 field goals on 57 attempts. Salve Regina's Dan Royce (Mahwah, N.J.) led the Seahawks with 16 points while his team shot 37% hitting 25-67 from the field.

 

LoRusso drained a basket in the opening seconds of the game and the Roadrunners never looked back stretching to a 13-point (29-16) lead after an 8-0 run, which commenced at 13:54 and ran until there was 10:06 left on the clock. The run was sparked by a dunk from Peterkin and capped off by a free throw from Travis Convers. The Roadrunners spent the next 2:44 climbing to a 16-point lead after a free throw from Peterkin put Ramapo up, 34-18. Dan Royce sparked a mini 4-0 run for Salve Regina to put his team within nine points but Ramapo responded again with a 5-0 run of their own to go up 15 (42-27) with 4:25 to play. In the final two minutes of the half, Ramapo strung together seven points to earn their biggest lead, 21, when two good free throws from LoRusso put the Roadrunners up, 52-31. Alex LaRosa (Salem, N.H.) hit a jump shot with eight seconds to go to come within 19. The teams headed into the locker room with a 52-33 score, Ramapo on top. LoRusso led all Roadrunners with 13 points in the half including a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe. Ramapo shot 18-27 as a team hitting 67% of their shots. Salve Regina went 13-33 (39%). Windell Hinkson (Groton, Conn.) led the Seahawks with 10 first half points. Royce added eight of his own.

 

In the first three minutes of the second half, Salve Regina strung together a 7-2 run to come within 12 points with baskets from Royce, Patrick Dineen (Medfield, Mass.) and Ryan Birrell (Hope, R.I.). With 15:49 to play, Royce sparked another mini run, 4-0, to bring the Seahawks within an eight point, 56-48, reach of the Roadrunners. Royce capped off the run with a layup. With just under 10 minutes to play, Ramapo had built their lead back to 16, 66-50, when LoRusso capped off a 5-0 run for Ramapo. On two occasions, 6:58 and 4:21, Salve Regina came within 11, but the Roadrunners strung together points to control the game and earn the 20-point, 88-68 victory. Ahmad Hassan led Ramapo in the half with eight points while Birrell contributed 12 to the half.
