No. 20 MIT Defeats Salve Regina, 8-1, in Regular Season Finale

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 20 MIT 8, Salve Regina University 1

- Records: No. 20 MIT (13-4, 8-1 NEWMAC); Salve Regina (10-6, 4-5 NEWMAC)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Jack Barry Field). 

- The Lead: No. 20 MIT exploded with five goals in the third quarter as it went on to defeat Salve Regina University, 8-1, in the NEWMAC field hockey regular season finale on Saturday afternoon. Graduate student Paige Forester (Glencoe, Ill.) tallied two goals and one assist for Engineers, helping her eclipse 200 career points. Julia Decker provided the lone goal for the Seahawks.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- MIT wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as it took the lead after 1:13 expired. Forester dribbled through the arc and found junior Eva Oppenheim (Tiburon, Calif.) at the far post for the redirect. The Engineers increased their advantage almost four minutes later when first year Ingrid Tomovski (Bosch en Duin, Netherlands) sent a high shot into the top of the cage. 

- In the second quarter, both teams produced four shots, including two on goal, while MIT had 3-0 edge in penalty corners. However, the score remained unchanged.

- The Engineers rattled off three goals in a span of 2:32 to help them pull away during the first five minutes of the third quarter. Forester started the scoring burst, followed by Tomovski, and then graduate student Liberty Ladd (Cornelia, Ga.) who also found the back of the cage in the 41^st minute. Junior Faith Choe (San Diego, Calif.) gave the hosts a 7-0 advantage courtesy of her first goal of the season with 1:38 left in the period.

- Salve Regina ended the shutout attempt exactly 48 seconds into the fourth quarter. A loose ball struck by Shannon Kennedy in the arc deflected upwards and it was tapped in midair towards the goal by Elizabeth Clark. Still in the air, Decker batted the ball just inside the far post. Forester capped the scoring in the 51^st minute during a one-on-one situation with goalie Bryn Protheroe.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- First year Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, Md.) made three saves in 45 minutes of action while junior Anna Duncan (St. Louis, Mo.) turned away one shot in the fourth quarter. Protheroe generated nine saves for the Seahawks.

- MIT led the way in shots (26-9), shots on goal (17-5), and penalty corners (10-4).
