Seahawks slip 3-2 to Wellesley Blue

WELLESLEY, Mass -- Field hockey fell just shy of peer NEWMAC team, the Wellesley Blue in a 3-2 loss Saturday on the road. 

The Seahawks established a 2-1 lead going into the final quarter, however the Blue gathered energy late in the game and squeezed out two goals at their home venue, Butler Stadium, to set the final score 3-2. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

All-Time Series: The Seahawks are 0-2 against the Blue. When the teams played in 2022 Salve Regina suffered a 3-2 loss at home on Gaudet Field

NOTEWORTHY:

  • No one scored in the first period, each team getting accustomed to the movement of the other. 
  • In the second quarter, 28:19 in to the contest Shannon Kennedy scored on an assist from Georgia Costello making the game 1-0. 
  • Wellesley started out the third period action with a goal from River Schiff and Salve Regina responded when Shannon Kennedy once again sunk the ball into the net for a 2-1 game. 
  • At 3:33 into the last quarter, Alex Butulis of Wellesley scored an unassisted goal. This was followed by another Blue goal from Marin Kriner with 7:36 to go in the game.  
  • Junior goalkeeper Bryn Protheroe remained in goal for the full 60 minutes and made nine saves. 
  • In total the Seahawks took 15 shots on goals and had eight penalty corners. The Blue took 13 shots on goal and had 11 penalty corners. 

ON THE HORIZON: 

Salve Regina will be at home once again on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 6:30 p.m. when the Wheaton College Lyons make the trip to the ocean state from Norton, Mass.
