MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Sophomore forward Lindsey Venuto (Foxboro, Mass.) scored with 5:28 remaining in the second half to give the Salve Regina University field hockey team a 1-0 victory over Gordon College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday night at Gaudet Field.

Despite the Seahawks outshooting Gordon 39-4 overall and 26-0 in the second half, the Scots were still in the game because of selfless defensive play, and solid goalkeeping. The Gordon backs were not afraid to sacrifice the body and get in front of the Seahawks shots.

The Seahawks were in control most of the, holding a 14-6 advantage in corners and possessing the ball for long stretches, but could not finish their scoring opportunities. The game seemed destined for overtime as neither team would budge defensively.

The goal came when Erin Gendreau (Sandwich, Mass.) fired the ball into the slot where Abigail Tepper (Foxboro, Mass.) controlled it and tried to direct it towards the goal. The ball slid to the left of the cage leaving it perfectly for Venuto who snapped it through the legs Scots keeper Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine.).

Jessie Severino (Branford, Conn.) finished the game with three saves for Salve Regina, earning her second shutout of the season. Hicks totaled 10 saves in the loss for Gordon.

Salve Regina improves to 4-2 overall and evens its conference record at 1-1. Gordon falls to 2-3 overall and is also 1-1 in the CCC.

The Seahawks will next be in action on the road against Lasell on September 22. The Scots return to action against Western New England on September 22 as well.
