MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – The Salve Regina University field hockey team improves to 7-2 after a 4-0 victory over Lasell College.

In the first ever meeting between the two teams Salve Regina took control from the get go, sustaining long possessions inside the attacking zone. A trend that would continue throughout the night as the Seahawks controlled the tempo and the ball, outshooting the Lasers 21-5.

The game was tied more than midway through the first half before Abigail Tepper (Foxboro, Mass.) broke through for the Seahawks.  Tepper took a pass from Julia Grover (Cotuit, Mass.) in a 2-on-1 situation and slipped a shot five-hole past Denise Landry (New Milford, Conn.) for the 1-0 lead.

The Seahawks then scored two more times during scrambles in front of the goal courtesy of Marissa Gagnon (Smithfield, R.I.) and Alexisse Clinger (Nantucket, Mass.) for a 3-0 lead at halftime.

With roughly 18 minutes to play in the second half and the ball deep inside Laser territory, Salve Regina head coach Jennifer Foster opted to send in her back-up goalkeeper Jessie Severino (Branford, Conn.) to get some game action. Before Severino was even to her crease play had resumed and Marissa Gagnon buried a shot in front to give the Seahawks the deciding 4-0 advantage.

Salve Regina starting goalie Murphy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) posted her fourth shutout of the 2014 season after only having to stop three shots thanks to the defense played in front of her.

The Seahawks next will play the first of three road games on September 27 versus Endicott College.
