Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - The Salve Regina University baseball team earned a sweep of visiting Gordon College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader Wednesday afternoon to wrap of the regular season and the top seed in the playoff standings.

Series and Streaks
The Seahawks own a 50-12 record in the all-time series and have won eight in a row over the Scots.

Three Stars of the Day

  1. Salve Regina junior Brett Wilkes (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) recorded a five-out save in game one, his fourth of the season. He threw an inning and two thirds, allowing one hit and striking out two.
  2. Salve Regina sophomore Dylan Ketch (Clinton, Conn.) went 4-for-7 on the day with four hits, two RBI, and two runs scored.
  3. Salve Regina senior Jonathan Lynch (Cumberland, R.I.) pitched two scoreless innings in game two. He allowed just one hit and struck our four in two innings of work to pick up his first win of the season (1-0).

Key Stat of the Day
The Seahawks stole eight bases on the day including three in the sixth inning of game two as they broke open the game.

Turning Points
In game one the Seahawks trailed 2-1 in bottom of the fourth inning. A balk from pitcher Mark Gadaleta (Chappaqua, N.Y.) brought in the tying run from third then Christian Vargas (Melbourne, Fla.) singled to score Colton Eremian (Boca Raton, Fla.) for the go-ahead run. In the top of the sixth with the Seahawks leading 3-2, Brett Wilkes came on in relief and threw an inning and two thirds, allowing one hit and striking out two to pick up the save.

In game two the Scots had numerous chances to break open the game for themselves but could not get timely hitting. They twice left the bases loaded after having them juiced with no one out, and once with a single out. In one such instance in the top of the third inning the Scots scored to take a 2-1 lead with the bases loaded, but then starting pitcher Tom Beliveau (West Newbury, Mass.) fanned the next three batters to limit the damage to two runs. The Seahawks retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single from Dylan Ketch then got more than enough insurance in the bottom of the sixth. In that frame the Seahawks used small ball to score three runs, with two successful bunt singles and three stolen bases for a 6-2 lead.

Quick Hits

  • Gadaleta went six innings for the Scots in game one allowing three runs on seven hits. He struck out three and walked one to fall to 1-3 on the season.
  • Will Ginsberg (Sharon, Mass.) pitched five and a third innings in game one for Salve Regina, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking six to improve to 4-2 on the mound.
  • Noah Henkell (San Diego, Calif.) went four innings for the Scots in game two, surrendering two runs on four hits with two strikeouts before being relieved by Drew McCormack (Dover, N.H.) who takes the loss in just a third of an inning of work to fall to 0-1. McCormack allowed one runs on two hits, walked a man and struck out one. Erik Gauer (Wayland, N.Y.) who started the game at first base took to the mound and threw an inning and two thirds giving up three runs on five hits.
  • Belliveau went four innings deep for the Seahawks in game two striking out five while allowing two runs on five hits and a walk. Andrew Roman (Monson, Mass.) the tossed an inning of scoreless action before giving way to Lynch who secured the win with his two innings of scoreless work. Colin Trahon (Raynham, Mass.) came on in the seventh to close out the game for the Seahawks and struck out two.
  • Salve Regina earns the number one seed in the CCC for the second consecutive season.
