Week at a Glance: Seahawks • April 29-May 5, 2024

NEWPORT, R.I. (Monday, April 29, 2024) -- It's the last week of regular season action for Salve Regina spring sports teams.

Last week women's lacrosse, track and field and women's tennis all wrapped up their seasons. Women's lacrosse fell 14-3 to Springfield College in the NEWMAC quarterfinals. Edie Threshie was the Seahawks high scorer, netting two of the three Salve Regina goals against the Pride. Ellee Kopecky made 18 critical saves in between the posts. 

Women's track and field sent athletes to the NEWMAC championship meet on Friday, April 26, and Saturday, April 27. Freshman Olivia Tacconi set a new Seahawk team record in the women's 100-meter dash with a time of 12.68 for a fifth-place finish. The previous time of 12.89 was a time Tacconi set herself at the Trinity Invitational on April 20, 2024. Olivia McHugh set a personal best and broke the 30 second mark in the women's 200-meter run, crossing the line in 29.32. 

Saturday, April 27, was the last game of the season for women's tennis. The team relented 9-0 to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineers. The team celebrated senior day by honoring the women's tennis class of 2024: Graysen Scherer, Casey Farrell, Ellysa Tancrede and Alexa Stevens.

TUESDAY (Apr. 30)

Baseball hosts Roger Williams University at 3:30 p.m. at Reynolds Field. The baseball team went 5-0 last week after beating Johnson & Wales University 8-6, Worcester State University 28-10, Anna Maria College 15-5 and Emerson College 20-0 and 7-0 in a doubleheader. The Worcester State game marked the second time this season the baseball team established a Salve Regina single-game run record. The previous record was set on Wednesday, March 20, when the Seahawks defeated Mitchell college 27-2. 

Men's lacrosse will travel to Wheaton College to play the Lyons at 7 p.m. in the NEWMAC tournament quarterfinals. Men's lacrosse qualified for the post season with a 4-9 overall record and a 3-4 conference record. Salve Regina has already seen Wheaton once this season and fell 13-11. However, the Lyons trailed until 7 minutes remaining in the third period. 

THURSDAY (May 2)

The Salve Regina baseball team will invite UMass Boston to Newport for a 3:30 p.m. game. The Beacons are 13-12 overall and 12-3 in the Little East Conference. Salve Regina sits at 29-5 overall and 12-2 in the NEWMAC. Since 1987 Salve Regina is 6-7 against UMass Boston. The most recent doubleheader on April 8, 2023, was a 9-5 and 10-6 winning day for the Seahawks.

FRIDAY (May 3)

Women's track and field will compete at day one of the New England DIII Championships on Friday. Two athletes from Salve Regina qualified this year, Olivia Tacconi made it in the women's 100 meters after running at time of 12.71 on day one of the NEWMAC championships and Anna Weygang qualified in the women's 5000 meters when she crossed the line in 18:36.83 at the Jerry Gravel Invitational on April 10. 

SATURDAY (May 4)

Day two of the New England DIII Championships will be underway for women's track and field. The Salve Regina Seahawk 4x100 meter and 4x800 meter relay teams will race at the event. 

Worcester Polytechnic Institute will make the trip to Salve Regina for an 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. baseball doubleheader. WPI has an 8-8 win-loss record against Salve Regina since the 1988 season. The last time the Seahawks and Engineers met was on March 7, 2010, and both games of the doubleheader were losses for the Seahawks.

Softball will be at Springfield College for a doubleheader at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday. Last week the United States Coast Guard Academy beat Salve Regina 8-7 and 5-2 in a doubleheader on Friday, April 26, and Babson pitched two no-hitters 4-0 and 10-0 against the Seahawks on Saturday, April 27. Saturday served as Salve Regina's senior day and the team honored Maddie Capetta, the senior from Raritan, New Jersey. 

SATURDAY (May 4)

To end the week softball will once again be on the road, this time at UMass Dartmouth for a 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. doubleheader. The most recent meeting of the Seahawks and Corsairs was on April 4, 2019. Salve Regina was victorious in both games for 4-3 and 6-5 wins.
