Paul Cardoza - while teaching physical education in the Newport public school system, Cardoza began teaching the same subject part-time at Salve Regina in 1975; the next year, Cardoza became the first full-time director of athletics at Salve Regina with responsibities including scheduling, facility management, equipment purchasing and maintenance, and coaching; as head coach of women's tennis, Cardoza established an annual tournament for the program on the historic grass courts of the Tennis Hall of Fame; likewise, noting the historical significance of another sport in Newport, Cardoza and Sister Esther Whalen established the roots of our sailing program; while basketball was already in place, other sports to be added during Cardoza's tenure include baseball, soccer, and softball; after leaving in 1989 to fulfill a professional goal to head a health and physical education department for a public school system, he continued to teach elementary education at Salve Regina and other institutions; returning in 2007, Cardoza has coordinated a health and wellness education program with highlights including peer education, the Red Watch Band program, MyPlaybook, and a bicycle loan program.
