Panthers win the day in Newport; Seahawks split their matches

Three Stars of the Day
1 – Plymouth State junior Francie Shaffer (Frederick, Colo.) led all players with 32 total kills on the day.
2 – Salve Regina junior Katie Linekin (Ridgefield, Conn.) led all players with 43 total digs on the day.
3 – Saint Joseph's junior Brionna Silva (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) paced the Golden Eagles with 48 total assists.

 

Turning Points

In the first match the Seahawks took a 2-0 lead on the Panthers only to see the visitors rally to win three straight sets to take the 3-2 victory. Alexa Price (Moultonborough, N.H.) had a double-double for the Panthers with 12 digs and a match-high 45 assists while Shaffer knocked in 18 kills to lead all players and Alisha Flanagan (Milton, N.H.) collected a match-high 27 digs. Olivia Noonan (Rochester, N.H.) sparked the offense for Salve Regina with 37 assists to go with 12 digs. Nicole Karabaich (Greenlawn, N.Y.) struck for a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs and Linekin led the Seahawks defensively with 24 digs.

In the second match the Panthers needed to go to extra points in order to edge the Golden Eagles in the first and third sets, but were able to walk away with a 3-0 sweep. Shaffer once again led the Panthers attack with 14 kills while Price tossed 33 assists and Flanagan collected eight digs. Amanda Goldstein (Lake Grove, N.Y.) and Lauren Harmer (Lake Grove, N.Y.) each led the Golden Eagles with nine kills. Silva handed out 24 assists while Danielle Senecal (Manorville, N.Y.) grabbed 11 digs to pace the Golden Eagles defense.

In the third and final match the Seahawks only trailed for one point, 9-8 in favor of Saint Joseph's in the first set, during a 3-0 sweep for the hosts. Senior captain Annie Donahue (Chelmsford, Mass.) led all players with nine kills in the match for the Seahawks, while Noonan tossed in 26 assists. Linekin tied for the match-high with 19 digs while Nicole Karabaich recorded a game-high five service aces. Silva once again chipped in 24 assists for the Golden Eagles while Kaitlin Williams (Holtsville, N.Y.) led the team with seven kills. Harmer notched three of her day-high four blocks and Senecal grabbed 19 digs.

Next up
Salve Regina (4-8) travels to Gordon on Tuesday, September 24 at 7 p.m. in a Commonwealth Coast Conference showdown. Plymouth State (14-1) has now won five in a row and will stay on the road, travelling to face Saint Joseph's (Maine) on Tuesday, September 24 at 6 p.m., while Saint Joseph's (L.I.) (1-8) will return home to host Saint Joseph's (Brooklyn) on Wednesday, September 25 at 7 p.m.
