Seahawks fall in non-league match with Bears

NEW LONDON, Ct. – Senior Keriann Mason had 11 kills and junior Kelsey DePorto had 10 of her own as the Bears beat Salve Regina is three straight sets (25-13, 25-17, 25-19) and extended their home winning streak to 25 games.

With the win – the Bears third in a row - Coast Guard improves to 13-8. Salve Regina, who had won eight of their last nine coming into the match, falls to 10-7 on the year.

In the first set, the Bears jumped out to a quick 9-1 lead and never looked back on route to a 25-13 set win.

In the second set, Coast Guard scored five of the first seven points before Salve Regina went on a 5-2 run of their own, cutting the lead 9-7. With the score 15-12, the Bears went on to win 10 of the next 15 points to win the set, 25-17.

The Seahawks got out to a 6-3 third set lead before the Bears were able to claw their way back and tie the set at 10-10. From there, Coast Guard scored four in a row to jump to a 14-10 lead. Salve Regina answered right back scoring four of the next five points once again tying the match, 15-15. Coast Guard closed out the set and the match going on a 10-4 run and finished the third with a 25-19 victory.

Sophomore Jennifer Duggan (Merrimack, N.H.) had 10 kills to lead the Seahawks while senior Megan Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass.) led the way with 9 digs. Sophomore Taylor Violet (Tiverton, R.I.) had 18 assists to go with her 8 digs.

Freshman Maggie Hine finished with a game-high 27 assists while junior Samantha Marmolejo led Coast Guard with 12 digs. Senior Catherine Walker added seven kills for the Bears.

Coast Guard will travel to Smith for a NEWMAC match on Tuesday, October 9th at 7pm before traveling to Bowdoin College for three matches next weekend. Salve Regina will also return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Newbury College.
