NEWPORT, R.I. – The Salve Regina University women's volleyball team has been announced as a recipient of the New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA) Academic Team Award.

The Seahawks were one of just fourteen teams to earn the honor, joining Roger Williams and Western New England as the only three Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) recipients.

The NEWVA Academic Team Award was established in 2008 to recognize the hard work and dedication of the teams' student-athletes off the court and in the classroom. In order to qualify for the award, teams must compile a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or better during the fall semester.

"I couldn't be more pleased with the team's success in the classroom," says Salve Regina head coach and 2011 CCC Women's Volleyball Coach of the Year Lindsay Marshall. "With our most successful season ever on the court, it's even more gratifying to know the team earned grades worthy to be honored by the NEWVA, compiling the highest team GPA that Salve Regina boasts. This is just the icing on the cake."

Marshall guided the Seahawks to a program record 16 wins this season, including the team's first-ever postseason victory. In addition, the Seahawks set the program's single season marks for kills (1071), kills per set (10.60), attack percentage (.205), assists (958), assists per set (9.49), serve percentage (.869), and reception percentage (.868).
