Camels snap Seahawks' winning streak with 3-0 sweep

NEWPORT, R.I. - Senior Amy Newman (Los Angeles, Calif.) led all players with 21 kills as the Connecticut College women's volleyball team swept Salve Regina University in straight sets, 3-0, at the Rodgers Recreation Center on Thursday night. The loss drops the Seahawks to 15-8 on the year, while the Camels improve to 14-6 overall.

The Camels took the opening pair of sets by scores of 25-12 and 25-13, before holding off the Seahawks for a 25-22 victory in the third and final frame.

Freshman Taylor Violet (Tiverton, R.I.) dished-out 24 assists for the Seahawks to go along with seven digs, while junior Megan Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass.) had a team-high 13 digs on the night. Senior Julianne Barry (Randolph, Mass.) compiled a .333 hitting percentage with seven kills in just 15 total attacks while leading Salve Regina with three blocks in the loss.

Newman paved the way for the Camels with her match-high 21 kills, compiling a .450 hitting percentage in the win. Senior Ally Terlizzi (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) led all players with 14 digs on the night, while junior Katie Ketcham (San Francisco, Calif.) delivered a strong all-around performance with nine digs, six kills, and a match-best 35 assists. 

Leading 9-7 close to midway through the opening set, the Camels went on an 8-1 run to open up a 17-8 advantage before cruising to a 25-12 victory. Newman paced the Camels with seven kills during the frame, while sophomore Clare Adams (New Concord, Ohio) had three kills and two digs for the hosts.

The Seahawks led 4-3 early in the middle stanza, however the Camels responded by taking seven of the next eight points to grab the lead, 10-5. Stretching their lead to six at 16-10, Conneticut College went on an 8-1 run, including five kills by Newman, to put the set out of reach at 24-11, before finally sealing a 25-13 second set victory.

The third and final set was a closely contested battle, with neither team holding more than a two-point advantage until the final point of the frame. The third game saw 14 ties and three lead changes as both teams struggled to gain the upper hand. Knotted at 22-all, the Camels finally managed to break away for three straight points to solidify the win, including consecutive kills by junior Rachel Schroff (Palos Verdes, Calif.) to close the frame, 25-22.

Both teams will return to action by competing in tri-matches this Saturday. The Camels will host Coast Guard and Endicott starting at noon, while the Seahawks will hit the road to face Bates and WPI in Worcester, Mass. beginning at 2:30 p.m.
