Corsairs rally past Seahawks, 3-1
NEWPORT, R.I. - Sophomore Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, Mass.) tallied 10 kills and 11 digs to lead UMass-Dartmouth to a 3-1 win over Salve Regina University in non-conference volleyball action Tuesday night at Rodgers Recreation Center.
Freshman Jessica Goncalves (New Bedford, Mass.) recorded a match-high 26 assists and 17 digs for the Corsairs, who improves to 3-0 with the win and 7-2 all-time against the Seahawks (1-4). Senior Deanna Salter (Westwood, Mass.) posted a match-high 29 digs to go along with six kills for Salve Regina.
The Seahawks held the Corsairs to a -.087 hitting percentage in the first game en route to a 25-14 win. Senior Natalie Rubenoff (New Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore Julianne Barry (Randolph, Mass.) each had four kills in the frame.
The Corsairs captured game two, 25-21, to even the match at one. Junior Lauren Safioleas (New Bedford, Mass.) notched four kills and sophomore Cami Ascher (Natick, Mass.) chipped in with three. They went on to win games three and four by identical 25-13 scores.
Ascher and junior Eleni Tsaparakis (Norwalk, Conn.) each finished the evening with eight kills for the Corsairs. Barry recorded a team-high nine for the Seahawks and also recorded five blocks (three solo), while freshman Megan Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass.) recorded 18 digs.
The Seahawks return to action on Friday when they compete at the Endicott Tournament. They will face the Gulls at 4 p.m. and Bowdoin at 6 p.m.
