Salter, Barry, Clancy Earn TCCC Honors; Seahawks Receive Team Sportsmanship Award

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Salve Regina University volleyball team placed three student-athletes on the 2009 The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) All-TCCC Team as senior Deanna Salter (Westwood, Mass.), sophomore Julianne Barry (Randolph, Mass.), and freshman Megan Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass.) were each recognized for their athletic accomplishments during the 2009 season. Salve Regina University also received the Team Sportsmanship Award for the third time in last four years (2006-07; 2009).

 

A Second Team selection, Salter leads the Seahawks with 227 kills and ranks second in digs with 271 heading into tonight's TCCC Quarterfinal matchup with Colby-Sawyer College. Salter has nine double-doubles, including eight in her last 12 matches. For her career, Salter holds a school-record 919 kills and sits second in digs with 1,135.

 

Barry - also a Second Team selection - leads the Seahawks and TCCC with 103 blocks (71 solo) and ranks third in school history in that category with 155 (113 solo, 42 assist). She reached 10+ kills in four matches this season, including a season-high 17 against Wheaton (Mass.) on Sept. 24. Barry also recorded a season-high nine blocks (five solo) in that match, and on Oct. 10 against Johnson & Wales, she notched six blocks (two solo).

 

Clancy, meanwhile, received Honorable Mention accolades. She leads Salve Regina and ranks fourth in the conference with an average of 4.08 digs/game. Clancy tallied 10+ digs in 21 of the Seahawks 29 matches this season, reached the 20-dig plateau three times (28 vs. Wheaton (Mass.), Sept. 24; 22 vs. Western New England, Oct. 17; 22 vs. Emmanuel, Oct. 24), and recorded a season-high 31 digs at the University of New England on Oct. 17.

 

Michelle Doddy of Colby-Sawyer College was named Player of the Year while Emily Lebowitz of Roger Williams earned Rookie of the Year honors. Marci Egbert of Western New England was tabbed Libero of the Year, Claire Varner of the University of New England was named Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year, and Kaitlin Kozak of Western New England was named Coach of the Year.

 

The No. 6 seed Seahawks (10-19, 5-5 TCCC) face the No. 3 seed Chargers (18-12, 8-2 TCCC) in New London, N.H. tonight at 7 p.m.
