PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – Roger Williams won the inaugural Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Women's Track and Field Championship on Saturday (April 28) with a score of 191 at Portsmouth High School in Portsmouth, R.I.

This was the first year that the event was contested as a true CCC championship as the addition of Endicott's women's varsity program triggered an elevation in the sport's status within the conference.

Six CCC varsity women's teams competed in the 19-event championship which included 11 track events and eight field events. The Hawks' closest competitor was Salve Regina University, which finished in second with 173 points. Gordon was the third school to break the 100-point barrier with 104 team points. Endicott, Eastern Nazarene, and Nichols finished the meet in that order.

Salve Regina had individual winners in three events with Natalie Kopiec (Manchester, Conn.) in the 400 meter hurdles, Erin Gunther (Sayville, N.Y.) in the triple jump, and Katherine Simoniello (Killingworth, Conn.) in the discus throw. Kopiec and Gunther were half of the 4x100 winning relay team with Devin Smith (Ipswich, Mass.) and Madison Stanley (Warwick, R.I.); Stanley and Smith were the first legs of the 4x400 winning relay team with Molly Powers (Mahwah, N.J.) and Maggie McCarthy (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.).

A dozen different Seahawks earned medals (top three) in their respective events:

The CCC Champions had individual winners in seven events with Makayla D'Urso (Londonderry, N.H.) 800 and 1500 meter runs, Sarah Mawdsley (Sandy Hook, Conn.) capturing the title in both the 3000 and 5000 meter runs, Savannah Fox Tree-McGrath (Billerica, Mass.) winning the high jump and javelin throw, and Madison Fancher (Gloversville, N.Y.) topping the 100 meter hurdles.

Each of the medalists will be named to the All-Conference teams with gold medalists earning First Team All-Conference honors, silver medalists earning Second Team All-Conference recognition, and bronze medalists being named to the Third Team. Additionally, the six CCC head coaches will vote on major postseason awards next week. Following the voting period the conference will recognize a Runner of the Year, Rookie Runner of the Year, Field Performer of the Year, Field Rookie of the Year, and a Senior Scholar-Athlete. Coaches will also be voting on winners for Coach of the Year and Team Sportsmanship.

The CCC Men's Invitational was also held on Saturday with Roger Williams emerging victorious. The men's event remains an invitational because of the small number of CCC institutions sponsoring men's track as a varsity sport.
