Seahawks win regular-season finale to clinch home playoff match

BRISTOL, R.I. - Salve Regina University defeated Roger Williams University, 5-4, Friday afternoon in the team's final Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match of the season.

The Seahawks managed a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Lauren Harvey (Edmond, Okla.) and Makenzie Sadler (Mystic, Conn.) took No. 1 doubles 8-3 over Taryn Roche (Greenlawn, N.Y.) and Riley Spillane (Easton, Mass.). However Libby Bennett (Watertown, Conn.) and Morgan Crimmins (Boston, Mass.) responded with a hard fought 9-8 (5) win over Abigail Burke (Harwich, Mass.) and Darcy Carlin (Brewster, N.Y.) at No. 2. Tanya Gianitsos (Old Saybrook, Conn.) and Samantha Rivkin (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) battled Anna Godshalk (Orleans, Mass.) and Erin Stangel (Old Saybrook, Conn.) at No. 3 but were unable to pull out the match, as the Seahawks won 9-8 (4).

At singles, the Hawks claimed two wins via retirement. Gianitsos was leading 6-3, 4-0 at No. 4 before her opponent Laura Krick (Groton, Conn.) bowed out. Rivkin was up 4-3 in the second set at No. 6 after being downed 1-6 in the first set to Carlin. Carlin was unable to continue to give RWU the set win.

Harvey picked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Roche at No. 1, while Stangel downed Bennett 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5. Crimmins was able to defeat Burke 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5 in a third-set tiebreak) at No. 3, but Sadler's 7-6 (9), 6-1 win over Spillane ended up as the deciding match.

Roger Williams (6-5, 3-4 CCC) will seek to avenge the loss Wednesday in a rematch against Salve Regina (5-3, 4-3 CCC) in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Quarterfinals.
