Potter's two goals secures top seed for Scots in win over Seahawks

WENHAM, Mass. (October 26, 2019) - Playing host to Salve Regina University today at the Brigham Athletic Complex in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup laden with playoff implications, Gordon College Women's Soccer booked an authoritative 2-0 win over the guest Seahawks to improve to 6-1-1 in conference, 12-3-3 overall on the season.

Senior captain Lexi Potter continued her offensive tear with a pair of tallies on the day to pace the Fighting Scots' win, while senior Kali Denty turned away four shots to preserve her sixth shutout of the season.

How It Happened

  • The Scots wasted little time getting the offensive gears grinding as senior captain Ashton Barkey fed a well-timed ball to Potter, who tucked the ball past Salve keeper Jenna Park at the 12:32 mark for the 1-0 lead.
  • Gordon continued to maintain the majority of possession and apply significant offensive heat throughout the remainder of the first half, firing 12 shots to Salve's three, but was unable to extend the lead prior to the halftime break.
  • Determined to widen the gap, though, the Scots struck again just shy of four minutes into the second frame when newcomer Alexa Weindorf fed Potter's second goal of the day to establish a two-goal cushion over their guests.
  • Despite the Scots continuing to control much of the possession, Salve Regina refused to go quietly and threatened to pull within a goal when Erin Harnisch fired a shot from range in the waning minutes, but Denty covered her bar masterfully to deny the attempt and close out the day with the two-goal win.

Beyond the Box Score

  • Lexi Potter's two goals put her atop the CCC leader board for goals on the season (13) and second for points (28).
  • Keeper Kali Denty's shutout positions her as the conference-leader in save percentage (.851) and goals-against average (0.93).
  • With today's win, the Scots secure the No. 1 seed for the upcoming CCC tournament, set to begin on November 2.
  • Salve Regina has two goals in its last six games (1-5-0).
