SEAHAWK WOMEN'S SOCCER RESULTS
Salve Regina 5, Worcester State 4
Reynolds Field - Newport, R.I.
Thursday, September 5, 2019

Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - Freshman keeper Jenna Park (Barrington, R.I.) made 16 saves for the Salve Regina University women's soccer team in a 5-4 victory over visiting Worcester State University in non-conference action Thursday afternoon.

Series and Streaks
Worcester State still leads the series 3-2-1 all-time.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Salve Regina freshman Jenna Park made 16 saves and allowed one goal to collect her second victory of the season between the pipes for the Seahawks.
  2. Salve Regina senior Katie Szemreylo (Marlborough, Conn.) assisted on the first goal of the game, then scored her own goal in the 10th to put the Seahawks up 2-0 early.
  3. Worcester State junior Tayla O'Leary (Salem, Mass.) scored twice, in the 84th and 86th minutes, to draw the Lancers within two scores.

Turning Point
Salve Regina scored 47 seconds into the game and raced out to 3-0 lead. The Lancers finally broke through when Taila Borci (Worcester, Mass.) scored in the 42nd, but they quickly gave the goal back when Margaret Hanley (Pembroke, Mass.) converted a penalty kick just 37 seconds later. The Seahawks led 4-1 at halftime and 5-1 after Meagan McLaughlin (East Hampton, Conn.) scored in the 67th. The goal proved to be the deciding tally because the Lancers mounted a furious comeback, scoring three goals in less than three minutes. Becca Lashua's (Gardner, Mass.) marker in the 87th made it a one-score game forcing some starters back onto the field for Salve Regina to close the game. The Lancers comeback bid fell short as they could not get another shot away against the Seahawks who hung on for the 5-4 victory.

Key Stat of the Game
The Lancers outshot the Seahawks 34-23 and 21-16 in shots on goal however the Seahawks scored on their first two shots on frame while the Lancers did not score until late in the first half.

Quick Hits

  • Tori Socci (Blackston, Mass.) started in net for the Lancers and allowed four goals while making five saves in the loss. Socci was replaced by junior Jill Zinkus (Grafton, Mass.) who made six saves and allowed one goal the remainder of the game.
  • Madi Thiel (Ellington, Conn.) spelled Park in net for nearly six minutes in the second during the second half and allowed three goals while making a save.
  • Five different Seahawks scored goals.

Salve Regina (2-0-0) travels to Rhode Island College on Saturday, September 7, at 12 p.m., in another non-conference matchup. Worcester State (0-2-1) returns home to host Clarke at 11 a.m.
