NEWPORT, R.I. - Sophomore midfielder Nicole Starkey (Warwick, R.I./Pilgrim HS) took one step after receiving a back pass from senior teammate Shelby Friedland (New Bedford, Mass.) and lifted a shot to the upper right corner one minute into overtime on Wednesday as UMass Dartmouth women's soccer defeated Salve Regina University, 2-1.

Both teams had scored in the first half before playing 55 minutes of shutout soccer. Friedland had the game's first tally in the 15th minute when she dribbled in a break away against Seahawk goalkeeper Angelina Saporito (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern). The senior keeper thwarted the first shot from Friedland but the carom returned to Friedland's left foot and the senior forward finished the shot with an easy tap.

Throughout the game, Salve Regina's lineup featured at least five freshmen on the field. One of the first years, Gwendolyn Plum (Killingworth, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth), scored the equalizer with 10 minutes left in the first frame. Junior tri-captain Anna Shultz (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) delivered a corner kick that went up for grabs in the middle of the box. Plum picked it out and lofted her kick similar to the eventual game-winner by Starkey.

Saporito made seven saves in her third game in goal while her counterpart, Madison Boucher (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Reg.)

Salve Regina falls to 1-2 on the season while the Corsairs win their first game (now 1-1) of 2014; UMass Dartmouth improves to 16-7-1 in the all-time series with the Seahawks.

The Corsairs make a trip to upstate New York this weekend where they will face Hartwick and Oneonta on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Salve Regina hosts Rhode Island College on Tuesday at Reynolds Field for the second of a five-game homestand.
