NEWTON, Mass. – The Keene State women's soccer team collected a 2-1 victory over Salve Regina on Saturday afternoon in the Lasell College Kick-off Tournament. The Owls opened the season 1-0, while the Seahawks began the 2014 campaign 0-1.

Freshman Taylor Farland (Fiskdale, Mass.) and sophomore Rebecca Costello (Meriden, Conn.) each scored for the Owls in the victory while junior Jennifer Wilson (Plymouth, Mass.) and senior Beverly Cole (Madbury, N.H.) each notched assists in the match. Senior Victoria Crenson (North Salem, N.Y.) made one stop in the first half to earn the victory before yielding to Sophomore Dannielle Warhall (Spofford, N.H.) who preserved the victory with a pair of saves in the second half.

Salve Regina senior Lauren Bulk (Portsmouth, R.I.) netted the Seahawks goal in the match, while junior Ielish Barbati (Marshfield, Mass.) collected and assist. Senior Angelina Saporito (Bristol, Conn.) took the loss in goal for Salve Regina, yielding two goals while stopping five shots in 90 minutes of work.

Keene State controlled the bulk of the possession in the opening half of action, out-shooting Salve Regina eight to two, and taking a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute of play when a well struck corner by Jennifer Wilson found the head of Rebecca Costello who directed it into the back of the net. The Owls carried their 1-0 advantage in the halftime break.

Salve Regina settled into the match in the second half, creating several quality chances and closing the gap as Keene State held only a seven to four edge in shots in the second 45 minutes. Keene State pushed their lead to 2-0 in the 77th minute when Beverly Cole took a short corner off the foot of Beverly Cole and curled a shot from outside the top corner of the 18 yard box past Saporito.

Salve Regina fought back, pulling a goal back less than two minutes later when Bulk ran onto a well-placed ball off the foot of Barbati and slotted into the bottom left corner to make it a 2-1 match. The Seahawks nearly equalized in the 81st minute, but Warhall stopped an effort from Raine Oesterle (Monroe, Conn.) to preserve the 2-1 victory.

Salve Regina will take on Bay Path in the consolation round of the Lasell Kick-off Tournament at 12 p.m., while Keene State will take on the host Lasell Lasers in the championship match at 2:30 p.m.
