Clear blue skies, but mounds of snow on perimeter of field reminded Seahawks how cold its season opener was on Saturday.

NORTON, Mass. – Junior attack Brooke Sabol (Landgrove, Vt./Burr & Burton Academy)registered five goals to lead the Wheaton College women's lacrosse team to a 14-4 non-conference victory over Salve Regina University on Saturday afternoon at Nordin Field.

Sabol, who has scored five or more goals in four games in her career, also dished out two assists for a game-high seven points. Classmate Allie Bush (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) added two markers and two assists, while junior Jenna Tewksbury (Concord, N.H./Concord) potted two goals and dished out one helper to fuel the offense.

Senior tri-captain Melanie Sharick (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) chipped in with two goals, while first-year Megan Hemmerlein (Contoocook, N.H./Hopkinton), junior Madison Cohen (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and sophomore Angela Mallis (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) all found the back of the net once for the Lyons.

Salve Regina received two goals from first-year Katie Kline (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) and one goal apiece from senior Sarah Woods (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and sophomore Kaitlin Gillespie (Haddam, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth). Senior Gina Tortorici (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) picked up the Seahawks only assist on the afternoon as she set up Gillepsie's first marker of the season at 24:45 of the second half to break open Wheaton's 8-0 shutout, at the time.

The Blue and White dominated play in the opening stanza outscoring the visitors 8-0 behind three goals from Sabol and two via Sharick. Wheaton also held a 17-6 differential in shots, a 7-2 margin in draw controls and a 15-11 advantage in ground balls. The Lyons also went a perfect 10-for-10 in clears, while their defensive play limited Salve Regina's transition game to eight clears on 16 attempts.

In the second half, Gillespie and Kline tallied back-to-back goals to bring the Seahawks deficit down to 8-2, but a smooth transition goal by Bush off a feed from Sabol at the 21:58 mark of the stanza thwarted any comeback bid by Salve Regina in the matchup.

Sophomore Giovanna Bishop (Portland, Ore./Grant) jump started Wheaton's quick transition goal by causing a turnover in the Lyons' defensive third before picking up the ground ball and firing it down field where it eventually ended up in Sabol's stick. Sabol then used her speed to burst by the final line of Salve Regina's for a two-on-one opportunity with Bush against Seahawks goalkeeper Josephine O'Reilly (Middletown, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey). Positioned near the left post, Bush corralled Sabol's pass and cut back towards the right post eventually shooting a low shot by O'Reilly for her second goal of the season.

From that point on, the Lyons outscored Salve Regina by a 5-2 margin to close out the win.

Wheaton senior goalkeeper Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) made eight saves to improve to 2-0 on the year. O'Reilly stopped a game-high 14 shots in the loss.

The Blue and White finished the matchup with a 29-21 differential in ground balls, a 14-6 margin in draws, and a 33-16 advantage in shots. The Lyons also went 18-for-20 on their clear attempts.

Senior Kelsie Jenquine (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) headlined Wheaton's defensive efforts as she scooped up a game-high six ground balls, won four draw controls and caused three turnovers. Hemmerlein collected five ground balls and caused two turnovers, while Bush had three ground balls and three caused turnovers and first-year Katie Peters (Medway, Mass./Medway) notched three caused turnovers to highlight the rest of the Blue and White's defense.

Wheaton (2-0) hosts Wesleyan on Wednesday, March 4 in a non-conference matchup at 4 p.m. Salve Regina (0-1) travels to Simmons next Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game.
