Nor'easters skate past Seahawks 4-1

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England women's ice hockey team defeated Colonial Hockey Conference (CHC) rival Salve Regina, 4-1, in the Fourth Annual Teddy Bear Toss Game at the Harold Alfond Forum on Friday.
 
Tatum Gietl caused teddy bears to rain from the stands as she scored at the 3:13 mark of the opening period on a breakaway setup by Kenady Nevicosi. Nevicosi added one of her own with 15:04 to play in the first as she put back a shot from Shannon Nadeau on power play.
 
The Nor'easters (12-5-2, 7-2-2 CHC) extended their lead to 3-0 early in the third period as Meghan Hamilton spun through the defense and scored on a backhand.
 
Brynn Mendes tipped a shot by Kimberly Dunn into the net to put Salve Regina (4-15-0, 1-10-0 CHC) on the board to start the third period. Jessie Scott tallied her team-leading 10th of the season on a power play with 6:34 remaining.
 
The Seahawks held a slim advantage in shots at 25-24. Julia Benjamin backstopped the victory with 24 saves. Madison Jalbert made 20 stops for the visitors.
 
The teams face off again tomorrow at St. George's Rink in Middletown, R.I. at 4 p.m.
