Summary
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Junior forward McKenna Gernander (Newington, Conn.) scored 28 seconds into the overtime frame on a delayed penalty to give visiting Nichols College a thrilling victory over the Salve Regina University women's ice hockey team in Colonial Hockey Conference (CHC) action.

Series and Streaks
The Seahawks lead the all-time series 18-5-2 however the Bison have won three in a row and gone 4-0-1 in the last five meetings.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Nichols Junior McKenna Gernander scored her second of the season in overtime to give the Bison the win.
  2. Salve Regina freshman Grace Schwartz (Brookfield, Wisc.) scored once and handed out a pair of assists.
  3. Nichols junior Abby Bassett (Burrillville, R.I.) made 29 saves to improve to 2-4-2 in net for the Bison.

Turning Point
The game was a back and forth affair which featured four different lead changes and three ties. After the Bison took a 4-2 lead early in the third period the Seahawks responded with back-to-back goals from Amanda Fantasia (Billerica, Mass.), setup by Grace Schwartz, then a goal from Schwartz herself to knot things at 4-4 and force overtime. In the extra frame the Bison took control of the puck first and carried into the attacking end. Katelyn Joyal (Longmeadow, Mass.) made a move to the slot and was tripped up drawing a penalty. The puck continued its trajectory and found Gernander in front of the goal who sneaked a backhand shot into the back of the net for the game-winning goal with a delayed penalty.
