HARRISVILLE, R.I. - The Nichols College women's ice hockey team defeated Salve Regina 3-1 in Colonial Hockey Conference (CHC) action Saturday afternoon at Levy Rink in Harrisville, Rhode Island.
Nichols (12-7-3, 6-3-1 CHC) opened up the scoring late in the first period when sophomore Mel McAleer potted her first of two power-play goals in the game, with an assist from sophomore Jordyn McGuire. McGuire also picked up a second assist on McAleer's second goal at the 11:32 mark in the second period, which ended up being the game winner. Senior Kelly Ferreira also collected an assist on the goal by McAleer.
The Seahawks (5-16-2, 2-7-1 CHC) collected there one and only goal at the 13:21 mark in the second period when Rebecca hasting potted a power-play goal with helpers from Lexie Anderson and Amanda Fantasia. Salve Regina pulled goalie Jennifer O'Connell with 2:38 left in the third period as a last ditch effort, Ferreira eventually found a pass up the boards from McAleer and potted the half ice empty net shot to seal the 3-1 victory for the Bison.
Salve Regina returns to the ice Friday, February 9, when it hosts University of New england at 7 p.m.
