Summary
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Senior netminder Cassandra Goyette (Norton, Mass.) earned her fourth shutout of the season as the Nichols College women's hockey team topped Salve Regina University 2-0 in Colonial Hockey Conference (CHC) action Friday night.

Series and Streaks
The Seahawks own an 18-2-2 record in the all-time series however the Bison have won the last two meetings.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Nichols senior Kelly Ferreira (North Falmouth, Mass.) scored on the powerplay to break a scoreless tie 5:18 into the third period. It proved to be the game-winning goal.
  2. Nichols freshman Abby Lueken (Grand Prarie, Alberta) scored on an empty net to seal the game for the Bison with 20 seconds remaining.
  3. Nichols senior Cassandra Goyette made 24 saves to improve to 8-6-3 in net for her fourth shutout of the season and her career.

Turning Point
The teams had battled to a gridlock through two periods. Both teams were 0-for-2 on the powerplay, but that changed early in the third period. The Seahawks took an interference penalty then 36 seconds later the Bison had the lead on Ferreiria's powerplay tally. The Seahawks then had three straight chances on the powperplay to try and tie the game, but came up empty handed. Still trailing by a goal, the Seahawks were forced to pull the goalie for the extra attacker. Abby Lueken scored on the empty net with 20 seconds left sealing the game for the visitors.

Quick Hits

  • Lueken's empty net goal was the first empty net goal the Seahawks allowed this season despite having had he goalie pulled for seven minutes now on the season.
  • Senior goalie Jennifer O'Connell (Marstons Mills, Mass.) made 26 saves in the loss to fall to 3-7-2 between the pipes for Salve Regina.
  • The Bison outshot the Seahawks 28-24 in the contest.
  • Salve Regina went 0-for-5 on the powerplay while the Bison went 1-for-3 with the advtantage.
