MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Sydney Linnick (Highland's Ranch, Colo.) scored the games only goal in the second period as visiting Plymouth State University defeated the Salve Regina University women's ice hockey team 1-0 in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action Saturday afternoon.

Series and Streaks
Salve Regina leads 13-2 in the all-time series however the Panthers have now won two straight after dropping their first 13 meetings to the Seahawks.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Plymouth sophomore Sydney Linnick scored her third goal of the season at 1:29 of the second period. It proved to be the game-winning goal.
  2. Plymouth junior Emelie Lindqvist (Gullerasen, Sweden.) stopped all 30 of the shots she faced for her second shutout of the season.
  3. Salve Regina junior Jennifer O'Connell (Marstons Mills, Mass.) made 29 saves in the game, allowing just the one goal in defeat.

Key Stat of the Game
Neither team could crack the opposing penalty kill. The Seahawks held the Panthers to 0-for-6 on the powerplay, including an extended 5-on-3 sequence, while the Panthers held the Seahawks to 0-for-5 on the powerplay.

Turning Point
The Seahawks began the second period on the powerplay with the game still scoreless. The Panthers killed off the remaining 1:04 of the penalty and then quickly got to work, using the momentum from the penalty kill. Sydney Linnick grabbed a lose puck at center and cut from the middle of the ice to the outside as she entered the Seahawks zone. The move caught the Seahawks in a 2-on-1 situation and with the defense backpedaling Linnick skated right to the front of the goal and snapped a shot of the glove of O'Connell for the game's only score.

Quick Hits

  • The Seahawks had numerous chances to try and tie the game late in the third, notably when Suzi Pearson (York, England) had a shot from the low slot go off the pipe and sit on the blue paint as players chopped at it. Lindqvist couldn't get to it to freeze it, but a Panther teammate finally was able to sweep it away from the goal and carry it to center. Shortly after the Seahawks were called for a penalty with 1:56 left in the period. Eventually the Seahawks were able to pull Jennifer O'Connell with 30 seconds left to make it 5-on-5 on the ice , but to no avail as the Seahawks couldn't find the back of the net.
