Herons top Seahawks 4-0

GENEVA, N.Y.- The William Smith College ice hockey team opened the 2017-18 season with a 4-0 win over Salve Regina in non-conference action at The Cooler this evening. The win improves the Herons to 3-0-0 all-time against the Seahawks.

Senior Krista Federow led the way for William Smith (1-0-0) with a pair of goals. First-year Lexi Nottke and senior Kiley Fewster recorded a pair of assists each for the Herons. Jennifer O'Connell made 60 stops in goal for Salve Regina (0-1-1).

The two teams played through a scoreless opening 20 minutes. William Smith had the upper hand in the first period, outshooting the Seahawks 19-3. Both teams fired shots off of the pipe in the opening stanza. Salve Regina had its best scoring opportunity of the game when Meredith Peppes wrist a shot off the right goal post. The rebound bounced harmlessly to the end boards.

Federow wasted little time putting the Herons on the board in the second period. She scored 53 seconds into the second period, 14 seconds after she stepped out of the penalty box. Junior Jordan Roetzer broke up a Seahawks clearing attempt and fed the puck to Federow at the blue line. Federow wristed the shot past O'Connell's glove and into the upper right corner of the net. Federow struck again at 12:04 of the second period. She collected a pass from Nottke in the slot, spun around, and wristed a shot into the back of the net. Junior Stephanie Hampton collected the secondary assist on the goal.

A pair of first-years notched their first career goals in the third period. Jules Kennedy banged home a rebound 1:51 into the stanza. Fewster fired the original shot from the point off of O'Connell's right leg, Kennedy pounced on the rebound, and jammed the loose puck into the goal. Fewster and sophomore Gina Scibetta were credited with assists on the goal. Julia Mings closed out the scoring at the 17:26 mark of the period. She carried the puck down the left wing, cut to front of the net and wristed a shot past O'Connell. Fewster and Nottke collected their second assists of the game on the goal.

Maggie Salmon made 10 saves on her way to recording her fifth career shutout.

William Smith finished the game with a 64-10 edge in shots on goal. Both teams came away empty on the power play. The Herons were 0-for-5 while Salve Regina was 0-for-4.
