Ephs use first period surge to down Seahawks

SEAHAWK WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY RESULTS
Williams 4, Salve Regina 1
Middletown, Rhode Island - St. George's
Tuesday, January 24, 2017

Summary
Visiting Williams College scored 51 seconds into the game and three goals in the first period on its way to a victory over the Salve Regina University women's ice hockey team in non-conference action Tuesday night.

Series and Streaks
This was the third meeting all-time between the Seahawks and the Ephs. Williams now owns a 3-0 record versus Salve Regina.

Three Stars of the Game
1 - Williams junior Alex Lovass (Wayzata, Minn.) - set the tone for the Ephs in the first period, scoring her second goal of the season 51 seconds into the game.
2 - Williams junior Christina Cleroux (New Glasgow, Nova Scocia) - made 26 saves while allowing one goal to even her season record at 4-4-0.
3 - Salve Regina sophomore Jennifer O'Connell (Marstons Mills, Mass.) - made 41 saves and allowed three goals. She now has 556 saves on the season.

Turning Point
Holding a 1-0 lead the Ephs killed of a Seahawks powerplay late in the first period. Shortly afterwards Mia Carroll (New Canaan, Conn.) found herself wide open at the top of the slot after the puck squirted out of a pileup in front. Carroll buried the shot, swinging momentum back to the Ephs. They rode that momentum and scored three minutes later when Kearan Burke (Shrewsbury, Mass.) tipped in a loose puck. After one the Ephs led 3-0 and had all the goals they would need for the night.

Quick Hits

  • The Seahawks drew within two goals late in the third period when Taylor Chisholm (Discovery Bay, Calif.) fired in a rebound at 11:15. The goal kept the Seahawks alive, eventually pulling O'Connell for the extra skater with under three minutes to play still trailing by two. The Ephs however shut the door on any comeback hopes by scoring on the empty net with 1:49 left in the third to seal the game.
  • The Ephs outshot the Seahawks 45-27 in the game including 20-7 in the decisive first period.
  • The Seahawks scored the only powerplay goal of the night, going 1-for-4 with the man advantage while they held the Ephs to 0-for-4 on the powerplay.
  • The Seahawks have now killed off 24 straight penalties.
