SEAHAWK WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY RESULTS

Salve Regina 6, New England Col. 2
Middletown, R.I. - Howard Rink at St. George's

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - After seeing a 3-0 lead be chopped down to 3-2 heading in the third period for the second straight night, the Salve Regina University women's ice hockey team scored three unanswered in the third period to defeat New England College 6-2 Saturday night in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action.

Series and Streaks
The Seahawks have now won five in a row over the Pilgrims. The Pilgrims still lead 13-10-3 in the all-time series.

Three Stars of the Game
1 – Salve Regina senior Danielle Phalon (Stoneham, Mass.) scored two goals.
2 – Salve Regina freshman Taylor Chisholm (Discovery Bay, Calif.) notched two goals and an assist.
3 – Salve Regina freshman Jennifer O'Connell (Marstons Mills, Mass.) made 26 saves for the Seahawks to improve to 6-1-0 on the season.

Key Stat of the Game
The Seahawks had committed six penalties in the game through two periods and were being outshot 23-20 despite holding a 3-2 lead. The Seahawks cleaned up their game and did not commit a penalty in the third, while the Pilgrims were called for three infractions. The Seahawks outshot the Pilgrims 12-5 in the final period and converted one of the three powerplays to take control of the game.

Turning Point
For the second straight night the Seahawks let a 3-0 first period lead slowly melt away in the second period. The Pilgrims only trailed by one heading into the third and still had a powerplay to start the period. The Seahawks killed off the remaining time and immediately jumped into their offense, pushing the puck hard up the ice and to the front of the net. A shot from the wing was saved by Lindsey Powers (Stittsville, Ontario) but it popped straight into the air and fell down in front of the goal. Amongst a crowd, Courtney Moulton (Merrimack, N.H.) put in the rebound to give the Seahawks a 4-2 lead 2:40 into the third, taking the wind out of the Pilgrims' sails. The Seahawks would score 1:35 later on the powerplay to make it 5-2.

Quick Hits

  • The Pilgrims almost tied the game late in the second when a puck was tipped in front and deflected off the left post then off of O'Connell's skate. The puck sat on the line for anyone to touch, and if it weren't for Meredith Peppes (Lincoln, R.I.) getting a stick in the push it out, O'Connell may have put it in herself when she sprawled to look for the puck.
  • Danielle Phalon notched two points to give her 100 in her career. She becomes just the second player in program history to do so (Rachel Porter 102 points; 2009-12).
  • Phalon also now holds the career mark for goals scored with 56, topping the old mark of 53 set by Caitlin Campbell from 2005-08.
  • Both teams were 1-6 on the powerplay.
  • The Pilgrims made things interesting in the second period when Mackenzie Meegan (Phoenix, Ariz.) scored 10 seconds into a powerplay. The momentum shifted in favor of the Pilgrims and later after killing off a Salve Regina powerplay, Alexis Severance (Seekonk, Mass.) scored by crashing the net and putting in a rebound.
