MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Five different players score and the Salve Regina University women's ice hockey team extends its winning streak to eight games after a 5-0 defeat of UMass Boston.

The Seahawks who had trailed early in recent games were the ones who jumped on top this time in the first period. Michaela Chiuccariello (Winchester, Mass.) took a drop pass from Michelle Holmes (Goffstown, N.H.) and fired a shot that trickled five-hole for an early 1-0 lead.

Later in the period Kimberly Spring (Kensington, Conn.) was sprung on a breakaway and hesitated for a moment before letting a shot fly under the arm of Beacons netminder Moe Bradley (Swampscott, Mass.).

The Seahawks once again established a strong fore-check keeping play in the attacking zone, but also having the speed to recover and stymie the Beacons in the neutral zone, tilting the ice heavily in Salve Regina's favor.

Danielle Phalon (Stoneham, Mass.) scored the only goal of the second period stabbing at a lose puck in the crease until it finally slipped into the goal.

Despite holding the lead the Seahawks continued to skate with no signs of letting up. The hard work which has been a staple of play for the Seahawks during this winning streak continued to pay dividends. The Seahawks added two more goals in the third period on a tip from Sarah Markey (Ashland, Mass.) and Holmes who took a puck away from two Beacon skaters in the attacking zone and walked her way to slot for the score.

Colleen Marcik (Madison, Conn.) gets her second shutout of the season stopping all 33 shots she faced. Bradley stopped 25 shots in the losing effort for the Beacons.

The Beacons outshot Salve Regina 33-30 but Marcik was always perfectly in position to make a save. The Salve defenders did a good job to clear people and pucks out of the crease area; rarely did Marcik have to scramble for loose pucks around the net.

The Seahawks have now won eight in a row and nine of ten in 2015 to improve to 11-6-1 on the season and 9-3-0 in ECAC Women's East play. The team will now play five straight road games to end the regular season beginning with a game against Amherst on February 10 at 7 p.m.

The Beacons who fall to 9-9-4 overall and 6-6-2 in the ECAC Women's East  return to the ice next Friday when they host Holy Cross.
