Seahawks hold off Huskies

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Michaela Chiuccariello (Winchester, Mass.) and junior Danielle Phalon (Stoneham, Mass.) each had a goal and an assist as the visiting Salve Regina University Seahawks held off the University of Southern Maine Huskies 2-1 in an ECAC Women's East game Saturday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.

The victory snapped a three-game (0-2-1) winless stretch for the Seahawks, and improved their record to 4-5-1 overall and 4-3-0 in the league.  The Huskies fell to 3-9-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the league.
After a scoreless first period, the Seahawks scored twice on nearly identical plays in a span of 2:52.  Phalon put the Seahawks on the board at 3:12 as she and Chiuccariello went in on a 2-on-1.  Chiuccariello made the pass and Phalon buried the shot for her sixth goal of the season.
The roles were reverse on the next Seahawk goal as Phalon was the playmaker and Chiuccariello the goal scorer.  USM senior goalie Liz Bergstrom (Chanhassen, Minn.) got a piece of the shot, but the puck just trickled over the line at 6:04.  The Seahawk score came just moments after sophomore goalie Colleen Marcik (Madison, Conn.) stopped USM sophomore McKenna Russell (Stoughton, Mass.) on a breakaway.
The Huskies stepped up their pressure in third period and finally broke through against Marcik midway into the period.  Sophomore Katie Couture (Harrisville, R.I.) scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season with a wrist shot after taking a drop pass from junior Cassandra Sherman (North Smithfield, R.I.).  Senior Talya Bent (Cranston, R.I.) picked up the second assist.
In the final minute, the Huskies tried to get Bergstrom off for the extra attacker, but the Seahawks killed much of the clock.  A late SRU penalty gave the Huskies one last bid to force the game into overtime, but Marcik held firm to deny a tying goal.
Marcik finished the game stopping 20 shots to improve her record to 3-4-1.  Bergstrom had 21 saves for the Huskies.
Southern Maine returns to the ice on Tuesday evening (7:00 p.m.) when it hosts Bowdoin College for a non-conference game.  Salve Regina's next game will also be Tuesday evening (7:30 p.m.) at Trinity College.
