Scorpio double-double propels Seahawks to victory over Bison, 76-63

NEWPORT, R.I. (January 22, 2020) -- Salve Regina University senior guard Torie Scorpio (Cranston, R.I.) scored 24 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lift her women's basketball team to a 76-63 win over visiting Nichols College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Rodgers Recreation Center on Wednesday night.

Series and Streaks
Salve Regina leads the all-time series, 39-11. The Bison had swept the season series a year ago to end a 17-game Seahawk win streak.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Seahawk senior Torie Scorpio (Cranston, R.I.) registered her first double-double of the season with game highs in points (24) and rebounds (16). She also made 10 free throws.
  2. Seahawk junior Mary Rorke (Norton, Mass.) splashed three 3-pointers to finish with 19 points. She also dished out a season-high eight assists.
  3. Bison freshman Alexis Finnerty (Chester, Conn.) shared team-high scoring honors with classmate Gina Parmenter (Oxford, Mass.), both with 17 points. Finnerty also had five assists and four defensive caroms.

Key Stat of the Game
Salve Regina outrebounded Nichols by 21 (51-30) including 21 offensive boards which contributed to 15 second-chance points.

Turning Point
Salve Regina freshman Lauren Wilmot (West Townsend, Mass.) made a second-quarter layup at 4:34 to tie the score at 24-24. Rorke's 3-pointer with 1:31 remaining in the period put the Seahawks ahead for good.

  • Salve Regina's bench contributed 20 points led by eight from freshman Gabby Sousa (Hudson, N.H.) and seven from senior Olivia Valerio (Proctor, Vt.).
  • Nichols' junior guard Shannon St. Lawrence (Milton, N.H.) also scored in double figures for the Bison with 15 points.
  • Salve Regina's freshman center Megan Henaghan (Whitman, Mass.) had two blocked shots.
