Four Seahawks in double figure scoring in Cave Classic setback to Chargers

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Senior guard Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) tallied 17 points, seven rebounds and a game-high nine assists to lead the Colby-Sawyer College women's basketball team to a 79-56 victory over Salve Regina University in the consolation game of the 2019 BSU Cave Classic Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Tinsley Center on the campus of Bridgewater State University.

Hamilton earned All-Tournament honors for the Chargers who improve to 4-1 on the young season. The Seahawks fall to 0-5 with the setback.

Hamilton connected on 6 of 10 field goal attempts including 4-for-6 from behind the arc as she now has 979 points in her career. Four of Hamilton's seven boards came off the offensive glass and she also added a pair of steals.

Senior center Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) added game-high totals of 18 points and 11 rebounds (five offensive) in 29 minutes off the bench for Colby-Sawyer, while junior forward Joslin Wainright (Plainfield, N.H.) also posted a double-double with 16 points and ten boards (five offensive).

Senior guard Torie Scorpio (Cranston, R.I.) paced Salve Regina with 14 points, four rebounds and six assists. Scorpio, who earned All-Tournament accolades, now has 989 points in her career. Junior guard Mary Rorke (Norton, Mass.) and freshman guard Gabby Sousa (Hudson, N.H.) checked in with 13 points apiece for the Seahawks, while freshman guard Morgan Shuey (Corning, Iowa) added ten points in 23 minutes off the bench. Sousa also pulled down seven rebounds (three offensive).

Colby-Sawyer led 36-34 at the break. The Chargers led by as many as 12 points (22-10) in the first half, but were unable to maintain the double-digit advantage. Salve used a 16-5 run between the first and second quarters to make it a one-point game (27-26) with seven minutes remaining in the half. The Seahawks connected on four three-pointers during the run including a pair by Gabby Sousa.

The Chargers held the Seahawks scoreless for the first 6 ½ minutes of the third quarter and used an 18-0 run to take control of the game. Wainright tallied six points during the surge, while senior guard Kristen Donaghey (Franklin, Mass.) added five. Colby-Sawyer led by as many as 23 points (79-56) in the second half.

Colby-Sawyer shot 46% (30-65) for the game and went 12-for-13 (92%) at the free throw line. The Chargers held a decided 48-25 rebounding advantage, including a 20-9 edge on the offensive glass, and outscored the Seahawks in the paint by a margin of 34-6.

Salve Regina connected on 33% (19-57) of its field goals attempts including 10-for-25 (40%) from behind the arc. The Seahawks were also a perfect 8-for-8 at the charity stripe.

The Chargers travel to Plymouth State University on Tuesday evening to take on the Panthers at 5:30 p.m. The Seahawks are off until next Saturday afternoon when they travel to Eastern Nazarene College for a 2 p.m. game with the Lions.
