Hughes leads Seahawks at ECAC Cross Country Championships

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Freshman Sean Hughes (Old Saybrook, Conn.) set the pace for Salve Regina in the ECAC Division III Cross Country Championships, finishing 51st in a field of 287 runners.

Hughes covered the challenging, hilly 8,000-meter course at Mt. Greylock High School in 28:03. Freshman Timothy Roosa (Woodbury, Conn.) was the Seahawks' second man in 30:49, followed by freshman Ben Campbell (Carolina, R.I.) in 33:05.

Sophomore Jack Simpson (Lynn, Mass.) finished in 34:15 and freshman Matt Sinkewicz (Colchester, Conn.)finished in 34:20 to round out the scoring five. Freshman Daniel LaBrie (East Providence, R.I.) was the Seahawks' sixth runner, crossing the finish line in 34:51.

Amherst placed three runners in the top five and captured the team title with a score of 44. Bates was second with 54 points; Williams was third with 84. Salve Regina, with a team score of of 968, finished 38th, ahead of five scoring teams. The team placement was the highest ECAC finish for Salve Regina since 2009.

The Seahawks conclude the 2012 season on Saturday, Nov. 10 in the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship meet at Westfield State University.
