Leopards visit Newport for second time with similar result
NEWPORT, R.I. - Trailing 4-3 with two matches remaining, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team used a pair of three-set victories to erase the deficit and pick up a 5-4 win at Salve Regina University in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon.
The Seahawks took a 2-1 lead after doubles play as they erased a deficit of their own in the process. Senior Jeff Tocco (Plymouth, Mass.) teamed with freshman Tyler Hall (Framingham, Mass.) to take an 8-4 win at No. 1 over senior Kevin Brocks (Albany, N.Y.) and junior D.J. Bisaillon (Watertown, Conn.). Salve Regina evened the match with an 8-4 win at No. 2 as sophomore Trevor Jones (South Hamilton, Mass.) and freshman Will Chasse (Greenville, R.I.) defeated sophomore Alex Mularski (Auburn, Mass.) and freshman Jarrett North (Roanoke, Texas). At No. 3 senior Will Masse (Wyoming, R.I) and sophomore Aaron White (Falmouth, Mass.) picked up an 8-6 win over freshmen Tristan Maus (Mansfield, Mass.) and Matthew Roberts (Westfield, Mass.).
Wentworth took a 4-3 lead through the first two singles matches to be completed as North defeated Brocks at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0, and senior Seng Ly (Lynn, Mass.) took a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jones at No. 4. Salve Regina quickly regained the lead with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 as Chasse defeated Maus, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 5 and White bested Roberts, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3), at No. 6.
At No. 1, Tocco dropped the first set to Masse, 3-6, before battling back to force a third set with a 6-4 win in the second set. The deciding set saw Tocco prevail, 6-3, setting the stage for the No. 2 singles match to decide the contest. Hall earned a 6-2 win in the first set over Bisaillon before Bisaillon forced a third set with a 6-4 win. The dramatic third set saw the Leopard rookie claim a 7-5 win and give his team its first league win of the season.
