Lions tame Seahawks on the courts

QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team soared past Salve Regina 9-0 in the final regular season match Saturday afternoon.

Prior to the start of the match, the Eastern Nazarene men's tennis program recognized its four seniors: Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass.), Greg Parenteau (Wolcott, Conn.), Tyler Perron (Plympton, Mass.) and Sam Son (Wilbraham, Mass.).

The Lions wrap up the regular season with a 10-7 record and a 4-4 mark in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the win. The Seahawks fall to 3-13 overall and 1-7 in league play with the decision.

Eastern Nazarene secured the No. 5 seed in the Commonwealth Coast Conference playoffs and will battle fourth-seeded Gordon in the first round April 28 on the road. The Lions narrowly fell to the Fighting Scots earlier this season by a score of 5-4.

The home team recorded three doubles victories to own a 3-0 advantage at the start of singles action.

Vladislav Tolmachev (Perm, Russia) and Son prevailed 8-6 at the No. 1 position over Jack Lawlor and Donovan Gangewere.

McKay-Corkum and Perron cruised to an 8-0 win over Matthew Carroll and Monaf Awwa at the second spot.

Davis Steelman (Darlington, Md.) and Parenteau picked up an 8-2 victory in the third doubles match.

Eastern Nazarene racked up six singles wins to earn its 10th victory of the year.

Tolmachev triumphed at the top slot 6-1, 6-2 against Lawlor while McKay-Corkum registered a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Gangewere.

Son breezed by Carroll 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 3 position and Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) downed Awwa 6-1, 7-6 in the fourth singles match.

Perron notched a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Kevin Brocks at the fifth spot. Steelman completed the sweep with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Will Masse at the sixth slot.
