Sweeney scores for Salve Regina men's tennis

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team captured its second straight match as the Leopards defeated Salve Regina, 8-1, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at Harvard University.

Wentworth swept the three doubles flights as seniors Juan Rodriguez (Quito, Ecador) and Dave Filar (Wolcott, Conn.) downed senior Aaron Isch (Tolland, Conn.) and junior Colin Gunning (Norwell, Mass.) at number one, 8-2. Junior Andy Chen (New Taipei City, Taiwan) and sophomore Dylan Melnik (Wake Forest, N.C.) took an 8-5 decision over freshman Khoa Nguyen (Haverhill, Mass.) and sophomore Mike Gallerani (Fairfield, Conn.) at number three, before Wentworth completed the sweep with an 8-5 win at number two as freshmen Sean Murray (North Brookfield, Mass.) and James Drum (Madison, Conn.).

Rodriguez defeated Isch at number one, 6-1, 6-1, to give the hosts a 4-0 lead before Filar's 6-2, 6-0 win over Nguyen at number three clinched the match for the Black & Gold.

Melnik defeated senior James Diamantopoulos (West Yarmouth, Mass.), 6-4, 6-0, at number six, Chen defeated Gallerini, 6-0, 6-2, at number four, and Drum defeated Gunning in three sets (1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4)) at number two.

The Seahawks' lone point of the day came at number five when Brian Sweeney (Waldoboro, Maine) defeated Murray, 6-0, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8).

With the win the Leopards improve to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in CCC play. The Leopards are at Endicott on Wednesday. Salve Regina drops its second straight match to stand at 1-11 overall and 1-5 in league play. The Seahawks are at Nichols on Thursday.
