Nguyen, Sweeney contribute two wins apiece

Khoa Nguyen paired with Kenneth McCormack for a 9-7 at No. 2 doubles before for scoring a straight-set singles victory (6-1,6-0) over Defiance on Friday at Hilton Head High School.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - Salve Regina University men's tennis narrowly missed a team victory when it fell 5-4 to Defiance College in the final match at Hilton Head during spring break.

The first four matches were tough for the men of Salve Regina tennis.

Senior Aaron Isch (Tolland, Conn.) fought against sophomore Ryan Nelson (Oregon, Ohio). Isch won the first set against Nelson and Nelson won the second. In the final set, Nelson trumped Isch and won the match.

Junior Colin Gunning (Norwell, Mass.) played against junior Cord Speelman (Bryan, Ohio) with final set scores of 6-2 and 6-1.

Seahawk senior Kenneth McCormack (Falmouth, Mass.) also found defeat against senior Craig Bills (Rockford, Ohio) with scores of 6-4 and 6-1.

Sophomore Monaf Awwa (Old Lyme, Conn.) from Salve Regina played against sophomore Justin Walker. Walker beat Awwa in both rounds with both outcomes being 6-3.

In the fifth match, Salve Regina freshman Khoa Nguyen (Haverhill, Mass.) won a match against Defiance College sophomore Michael Vanderkolk (Bluffton, Ohio) dominating in the first two sets. The first set having the final outcome of 6-1 and the second 6-0.

The sixth match also had an outcome in the Seahawk's favor. Salve Regina senior, Brian Sweeney (Waldoboro, Maine) came back to win the match in the final set. Sweeney one the first against sophomore Tyler Thiel (Bryan, Ohio) 6-4. However in the second set, Thiel won 4-6. Sweeney battled in the final set and won with a score of 1-0.
