SALVE REGINA UNIVERSITY SEAHAWKS

Seahawks blank Pride

NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University men's tennis swept nine matches from Regis College without giving up a single game in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) match at Newport.Brian Castrichini

The victory was the 100th win in conference regular season play for the Seahawks since 1995 (100-5 during that period).

The Seahawks (3-6; 1-0 TCCC) swept the doubles with senior captains Andrew Martin [Glastonbury, Conn.] and Steve Masso [No. Scituate, R.I.] at No. 1 spot earning their team-best fifth victory. Sophomore Zachary Rosenfeld [Easton, Conn.] and freshman Chad Strong [San Diego, Calif.] made it 2-0 with a sweep at No. 2 doubles while sophomore Brian Castrichini [Winchester, Mass.] and freshman Aaron Isch [Tolland, Conn.] took No. 3 doubles by an 8-0 score.

Masso was the first one finished with singles followed by Castrichini who earned his first victory of the 2009-10 season in singles. Regis, in only its first year as a varsity program since going co-ed two years ago, managed a couple of duece points the entire day.

"We did not take them lightly," said Salve Regina first-year head coach Joe Heckley about the Pride. "We knew we had to come out and play our tennis to get the job done and that's what we did. The win will put us in a nice mindset for our two tough conference matches this weekend."

Salve Regina hosts Nichols College on Saturday and Colby-Sawyer College on Sunday (both matches at 1 p.m.). Regis (0-2; 0-2 TCCC) draws the Chargers of Colby-Sawyer on Saturday at its new home tennis complex.
