Tufts shuts down Seahawks, 9-0

NEWPORT, R.I. - Tufts University defeated Salve Regina University 9-0 in non-conference men's tennis action Saturday afternoon.

 

Senior Steve Masso (North Scituate, R.I.) was dealt a 6-1, 7-6 (3) loss at No. 1 singles by Sam Laber. At No. 2 singles, sophomore Zachary Rosenfeld (Easton, Conn.) suffered a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Jake Fountain, while at No. 3 singles, freshman Chad Strong (San Diego, Calif.) lost 6-2, 6-0 to Kai Victoria.

 

Sophomore Brian Castrichini (Winchester, Mass.) took a 6-0, 6-0 loss at No. 4 singles to Andrew Lutz, freshman Aaron Isch (Tolland, Conn.) lost 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles, and freshman Michael Powell (Orange, Conn.) was tripped up at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0.

 

The Jumbos (1-0) No. 1 doubles team of Fountain and Victoria knocked off Masso and Rosenfeld at No. 1 doubles, 8-2, while their No. 2 doubles team of Lutz and Ben Barad defeated Strong and Castrichini, 8-3. At No. 3 doubles, Laber and Morrie Bossen defeated Isch and Powell, 8-1.

 

"Tufts is a strong team, but I thought we competed well," said Salve Regina first-year head coach Joe Heckley. "This match gave us a better understanding of what we need to improve upon going forward. Hopefully, we will be able to carry over what we learned today into our match against Babson."

 

The Seahawks (0-1) return to action on Friday when they travel to Babson for a 3:30 match.
