Salve Regina, Coast Guard knotted at one goal apiece after 2OT

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard climbed back from a one goal deficit in the second half but could not find the game winner as they tied Salve Regina 1-1 in non-conference action Wednesday evening.

With the tie, the Bears are now 3-2-1 on the season while the Seahawks move to 4-2-1 overall.

Junior Alex Hall scored his first goal of the season for the Bears while junior Landon Klopfenstein tallied his second assist of the season.

Senior Jared Warren scored his fourth goal of the season and sophomore Donald Igo came off the bench to notch his third assist of the year.

Coast Guard had the best opportunity early on in the first half as sophomore Brock Hassett slid a cross from the right side to senior Ryan Dandan just inside the penalty box. Dandan settled and took a shot but was blocked by a Salve Regina defender and knocked out of play.

The Seahawks however found the back of the net first as Igo leaked a pass to the center of the Bears penalty box from the right side. Before any Coast Guard defender could react, Warren came charging in and struck a shot into the right corner of the goal with 23:01 on the clock giving Salve Regina the early 1-0 advantage.

The Bears attempted to answer in the 26th minute when junior Patrick Palermo-Re took a free kick from 30 yards out in the center of the pitch. His shot dipped over the Seahawks wall but clanged off the cross bar and out of play for Coast Guard's best opportunity of the half.

Coast Guard turned the pressure back up and in the 39th minute Klopfenstein found space down the right side. As he dribbled into the penalty box he cut back to his left on two defenders and fired a shot to the near post. The shot was just out of the reach of junior goalkeeper Michael Payan but on the wrong side of the post and out of play for a goal kick.

The Bears found the equalizer in the 62nd minute as once again Klopfenstein ripped a shot from the right side of the Seahawks penalty box. Payan managed the save pushing the shot of the post but the rebound came directly to Hall who buried it in the back of the net making the score 1-1.

With Coast Guard continuing to pressure in the second half, Salve Regina found a little space on the counter as Sophomore Evan MacDonald received a pass in the center of their attacking third. He hit a shot from 30 yards out that forced senior goalkeeper Jake Sorenson to rise up and push the ball over the bar for a Seahawks corner.

In overtime the Bears held a majority of the possession and had the best opportunity of either overtime period when Dandan settled a pass at the top of the penalty area and sent a dipping rocket towards goal but like Palermo-Re in the first half, hit the cross bar and the rebound was cleared by the Salve Regina defense sealing a 1-1 tie for the two teams.

Sorenson (3-2-1) made three saves on four shots on goal allowing the lone goal.

Payan made seven saves on eight shots on goal allowing one goal as well.
