NEWPORT, R.I. – Gordon College men's soccer scored once in the first half and twice in the second half to defeat Salve Regina University, 3-0, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Reynolds Field.
In the 39th minute, a Fighting Scot corner kick cleared the box and landed on the foot of sophomore Collin Surface (Tallmadge, Ohio). He lifted it back into the box where classmate Josh Beveridge (Anchorage, Alaska) headed to his right for his first goal of 2016.
Two minutes into the second half, Gordon made it a 2-0 score. Freshman Michael Cuocci (Baltimore, Md.) carried the ball down the right side in front of the Seahawk bench, almost reaching the goal line before crossing to a sliding Tyler Modzeleski (Cazenovia, N.Y.) who tucked his fourth goal of the season just inside the near post.
Mark Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio) had his fifth goal of the season in the 70th minute after touching in a Josh Cochran (Bellville, Ohio) shot that bounced perpendicular with the cross bar.
Salve Regina sophomore Michael Payan (Fort Lee, N.J.) made five saves in his 90 minutes, while Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.) stopped all three shots he faced in nearly 78 minutes before Nate Weaver (Westfield, Mass.) replaced the Fighting Scot goalkeeper.
